Learn German
To find your way in Germany, it is important to know the German language. As you learn German, you will get better and better at finding your way around independently, talking to your neighbours, making arrangements with schools and employers and attending appointments with the authorities.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) offers various language courses for learning German. The language course providers in your area can advise you. You can find the language course providers on our map under Language Courses.
The integration course is suitable for people who have little or no knowledge of the German language. It consists of two parts: a language course and an orientation course.
The language course covers important topics of everyday life and can be completed with a "German Test for Immigrants" (usually with language level B1 or A2).
The orientation course teaches the basics of German history and culture and social values and norms for living together in Germany. It is concluded with the test "Living in Germany".
German courses for the workplace enable you to further develop your current language level and to prepare yourself linguistically for work or a professional activity by using the appropriate vocabulary.
The contact persons for participation in the vocational language course are the employment agencies or job centres.
There are other ways to learn German, for example in courses offered by adult education centres, at schools, universities, in associations or through the support of volunteers.
Language mediation/ Translation services
Learning a new language takes time.
The language mediation services in our map support successful communication at appointments with authorities, doctors and schools, for example. Specially trained language mediators can help here in person, by telephone or via video.
If you have a sufficiently good knowledge of German, you may be able to work as a language mediator yourself.
